Enterprise data center is becoming more and more important nowadays, how to ensure the stable operation of enterprise data center has become a very critical factor. UPS is the standard accessory of many enterprises in the data center, so how to choose a UPS power supply suitable for enterprise application?

  UPS classification:

Generally, UPS systems fall into three categories: backup (or off-line), online interactive, and dual-conversion (online). Different manufacturers offer different configurations of UPS, and customers choose the UPS they need based on their goals, applications, and functional requirements, as well as their desire to differentiate their products.

How to choose UPS uninterruptible power supply

  1. Firstly, make sure how much power is required for the equipment in your data center. Generally speaking, the power of an ordinary PC or ipc is around 200W, while that of a MAC is around 300W, and that of a server is between 300W and 600W. Just buy as required.

  2. Secondly, it should be understood that the rated power of UPS can be expressed in two ways: apparent power (unit VA) and actual output power (unit W). This difference is caused by the existence of reactive power. So calculate when you buy

  3. UPS is usually divided into power frequency machine and high frequency machine. The power frequency machine consists of SCR rectifier, IGBT inverter, bypass and power frequency booster isolation transformer. Because its rectifier and transformer operating frequency are 50Hz power frequency, as the name implies is called power frequency UPS.

Given these options, how should you choose your UPS configuration?

Know yourself and know your enemy

When choosing UPS, you need to know your own business requirements, as well as your own financial budget, and set the input capital and operating costs of the UPS system. You also need to understand the availability of UPS, so the UPS system you choose should not be one that can tolerate only a few hours of downtime. Your UPS configuration choices should be aligned with your availability requirements, and your budget should be set based on the potential loss of data center outages.

Cooling infrastructure. Add cooling load to your facility depending on the UPS system you choose. For large data centers, even a one or two percent reduction in UPS efficiency can translate into a lot of heat, which must be removed to protect the equipment. Can your existing infrastructure handle this load, or does your UPS need to be upgraded?

Space. The UPS system takes up valuable data center ground space, so make sure the configuration you choose does not require additional space in your facility. Now the machine room can be said to be an inch of land an inch of gold, so the size of UPS is particularly important.

Redundancy. You have a temporary backup power supply system (UPS), so why not back up your backup? If availability is a key design consideration, redundancy is necessary. Adding backup UPS can avoid single point of failure and improve the reliability of power supply system. A common backup configuration is N+1 (for example, if you need six UPS to run your data center, the N+1 design involves seven devices), others include 2N (double the number of devices required), 2N+1, and so on. More redundancy can improve reliability or availability, but it also requires more equipment cost (higher capex), more ground space (depending on configuration), and less efficiency.

Design complexity. Simple designs tend to be less prone to human errors and isolated failures, but they may also lack some of the features you'd prefer to see in a UPS system. For example, a switch in an online interactive UPS system is a potential point of failure that does not exist in a double-conversion design. In addition, complex designs may require more maintenance (or, simply, maintenance costs) than simple designs.

Modular. If you expect your IT needs to grow, you should consider a modular approach. "Buy ahead", buying more equipment than you need now, will cost you more capital expenditure, storage space and potential operating costs. The modular approach allows you to add infrastructure when you need it, preventing demand from growing and the previous facility from becoming a waste.

These methods can be summarized in four words: proper temperature, regular charging and discharging, good use of communication functions, and timely replacement of damaged batteries. In the study of power supply, there is no university or primary school to ask, as long as pay attention to observation, we can summarize a variety of features and methods, convenient for our design
